Who doesn't love food? An ecstasy for the five senses that brings the ultimate satisfaction to the human being. Capturing this phenomenon in a feature film is not an easy task. All of these food based movies have that feel good factor and would either make you crave for the food or inspire you to cook no matter who you are😃. These movies showcase the exquisite cuisine around the world and the culinary expertise of the chef making it a pleasant experience for the viewers.
This being one of my favorite genres i had to spend a week, taking a list of movies based on food, had to watch a dozen and re-watch another dozen to come up with the a recommended list 13 from around 40+ movies. Bon Appetit!
1.Chef(2014):
A popular head chief in a California based restaurant gets into a confrontation with a food critic and leaves his job. He along with his son go on a road trip to bring back a food truck creating delicious food,fan following and re-discovering himself in the process. A light hearted feel good comedy that would take you along on a wonderful road trip with some mouth watering dishes. Jon Favreau is a delighting performer. A Must watch! Warning: Don't go near the Bollywood remake in the same name starring Saif ali khan

2.The hundred Foot journey(2014):
An Indian family loosing their restaurant in Mumbai due to a riot fire leave to London and eventually end up in France looking for a place to setup their new restaurant. They happen to open up an Indian cuisine restaurant just opposite a famous and elite michellin star restaurant run by an renown chef (Helen mirren). Competition heats up. Hassan the talented chef passionate about cooking goes on dream run. A beautifully made movie with some seasoned performers like Helen mirren and Om Puri. An amalgamation of french and Indian cuisine and flavors shot in a exotic locales in rural France takes you on a memorable journey. Music by our very own Ar Rahman takes it one notch higher. Surprise factor- This small budget film is Co-produced by Steven Spielberg

3. Julie&Julia(2009):
Based on real life characters and story ,the movie is set in two different time frames and revolves around two characters julie and julia. In 1950's Julia wife of an American bureaucrat shifted newly to paris learns french cooking and starts to write a book on cooking. In early 2000's, Julie a government worker starts to write a blog by cooking recipes from the Julia's book(A legend by now). Shifting across times frames and lives of the two characters, the movie draws similarities between the characters, their struggles, their family lives etc. The legendary actor Meryl Streep as Julia is a class apart.

4.Ratatouille(2007):
If there is one movie i should take up with me when stranded on an island i would choose the "Ratatouille". Hands down this is the best movie ever to be made in this genre. Yes an Animated movie that surpasses all others. The amazing tale of a rat with an aspiration to cook ends up becoming one of the greatest chef in the town against all odds. "Anyone can Cook" is the tagline and the message being conveyed. Greatest life lessons can come from the lest expected sources.Such a beautiful story made into a wonderful movie with the heart and soul in its place.A movie which you would remember and cherish for ages.A movie for everyone of us. A MUST MUST MUST Watch !

5. Mostly Martha aka Bella Martha( 2001) German / No Reservations(2007):
A head Chef in a German restaurant leading a lonely and depressed life has to take care of her niece after her sister's death. While she struggles to cope up in upbringing the 8yr old, an eccentric Italian chef enters their life and brings sunshine. A simple no-non sense romance drama.No Reservations is an Hollywood remake of the German movie Bella martha/Mostly Martha. So for those who prefer Catherine zeta jones and Aaron eckhart can go with 'No reservations'

6.Le chef aka Comme un chef(French) (2012):
A three-star michellin chef in a famous restaurant in paris has to re-invent his cooking to maintain the third star and he gets help from an unlikely source,A young and rusty chef working as a painter now who considers him a mentor. The bonding between the two and the their path towards the challenge forms the core plot. A Fun and enjoyable ride with a fair share of humor,drama and love for food.

7. East side Sushi(2014):
A single Mexican mom working in a fruit vending cart cutting fruits for years joins a local Japanese restaurant where she learns to cook the delicate Japanese dish-sushi. She aspires to become a sushi chef against all odds. A heart warming and inspiring movie that would make you root for the protagonist and create a new born love for Sushi 😋.

8. Burnt(2015):
A michellin two star chef who had lost his life to drug addiction , after being in exile for long returns back to redeem his life and aim for the elusive third star. He has to re-discover his culinary expertise as well as change himself as a person to succeed. Burnt shows the pressure faced by the chefs in trying to achieve perfection and the stress they have face day in day out. Exquisite cuisines and high class cooking makes it a compelling watch thought the plot is drawn out. Worth a watch. Bradley cooper is a natural performer and bodes well with the character.

9.Tortilla Soup(2002)/ Eat Drink Man Woman(1994):
A Mexican American chef leads his retired life with three of his daughters making them sumptuous and delicious family feasts on Sundays.As life goes on the three daughters start moving out while he finds a future for himself. A family drama with some exotic and mouth watering Mexican dishes served. Another simple movie with a good heart and a unlikely twist to the end. This is a remake of Chinese movie 'Eat drink man woman'. So choose between the two based on the cuisine you like( Mexican or Chinese) .

10.Chocolat(2000):
A single mother with her young daughter arrive in conservative village in France and opens up an a chocolaterie . while villagers are reluctant and the mayor lobbying against her, she slowly pulls them in with her melting and delicious chocolate fantasies and her relentless effort that brings in a change in the society. A True chocolate confectionery can melt even the strongest hearts. A beautiful romance drama with lots and lots of chocolate delicacies. 5 nominations in Academy awards.Johnny depp plays a extended cameo.

11.Today's Special(2009):
An ambitious indian working as a supporting chef in a network restaurant disappointed with not being promoted decides to leave for paris. However his dreams are put on hold when his father becomes hospitalised and he has to now take care of their depriving indian restaurant. He finds unlikely ally in a taxi driver who teaches him indian cuisine and magic of spices.Naseerud din shah in a pivotal guest role. An underrated feel good drama with a touch of indian flavor.

12. Big night(1996):
Two Italian brothers running their failing Italian restaurant in New jersey get a chance to to host a famous pop singer. They do everything possible to host a feast for the big night hoping for better prospects. The bonding between the brothers even during the tough times and how they overcome the odds together forms the crux. The movie success lies in teleporting the viewers to the restaurant on the big night serving a sumptuous feast of food and emotions. Highly rated by the critics.Watch out for the mouth watering Italian Timpano .
13.Cook up a storm(2017) aka Jue zhan shi shen(Chinese):
In a well known food street in Hong-kong a young street restaurant cook (cantonese cuisine) competes with a michellin three star chef from france in cooking competition . The winner gets to compete in global competition ,leading upto a final battle against God of cookery . He has to prove his worth to his father who had left him as a kid and now holds the title 'God of cookery' . An entertaining movie with some extraordinary showcase of culinary arts in typical Chinese fast paced style.
